Post thrombotic syndrome is common in people who have had a DVT. Generally, one out of three people who have had a clot in the deep leg veins develop post thrombotic syndrome within 5 years. Most episodes of post thrombotic syndrome will occur within two years of the blood clot (DVT).

How do I know if I have post thrombotic syndrome? The symptoms can be mild, moderate, or severe. If you notice any of the following symptoms in your leg, it may mean that you have post thrombotic syndrome:

  • Leg pain, aching, heaviness, and swelling
  • Itchiness, numbness or tingling
  • Discoloration as in brownish skin pigmentation
  • Venous leg ulcers
  • Symptoms get worst in individuals having occupations that require standing or sitting
